Dishwashers look like the simplest appliance to size. They are boxes, and the boxes come in two widths. Then someone orders a freestanding machine for a built-in slot and discovers it is 30 mm too tall to go under the worktop.
That 30 mm is the single most common dishwasher mistake, so let us start there.
Built-in and freestanding are not the same height
Bosch's fully-integrated 60 cm machines, the SMV6ZCX16E, SMV4HCX19E and SMV26AX00Q, all measure 598 x 815 x 550 mm and need a cabinet opening of 600 x 815 x 550 mm.
Bosch's freestanding 60 cm machines, the SMS8YCI01E, SMS6ZCI16E, SMS4HMI07E and SMS4IMW62Q, measure 600 x 845 x 600 mm. They have their own finished top and a taller body.
A standard Singapore kitchen worktop sits around 850 mm off the floor with the worktop slab itself taking up part of that. The built-in machine at 815 mm slides underneath with room for the adjustable feet. The freestanding machine at 845 mm does not, and there is no way to make it.
Electrolux is consistent with this. Their built-in EEM48301L needs a 600 x 820 x 550 mm opening and the machine itself is 596 x 818 x 550 mm. Their freestanding ESA47200SX and ESA47200SW are 598 x 850 x 622 mm.
The three types, and what each one asks for
Fully integrated. No visible controls, a cabinet door screws onto the front. You measure the cabinet opening. Bosch's 60 cm fully-integrated range wants 600 x 815 x 550 mm.
Semi-integrated. A control panel strip stays visible along the top, with a cabinet door below it. The Bosch SPI2HKS42E at 45 cm needs a 450 x 815 x 550 mm opening. Note its product depth is 573 mm against a 550 mm cutout depth. The extra 23 mm is the door and controls sitting proud of the cabinet line, which is exactly what you want, but it does mean you need clearance in front.
Freestanding. Finished on all visible sides. You measure the gap in the run, and you need the full height. Bosch's 45 cm freestanding machines, the SPS4HMI64Q, SPS2IKW55K and SPS2HKW57E, are all 450 x 845 x 600 mm.
45 cm or 60 cm
The narrow machines take a real capacity hit. Electrolux states place settings on their models, which makes the comparison concrete: their 60 cm ESA47200SX handles 13 place settings, the EFF1460VSA and EEM48301L handle 14, and the 55 cm compact EFC3862MS handles 8.
If your kitchen run has 600 mm to spare, use it. A 45 cm machine only makes sense when the space genuinely is not there, and in a compact HDB kitchen it often is not. The 45 cm slimline range exists for that situation.
The compact EFC3862MS is a different proposition again at 550 x 590 x 500 mm. It sits on a worktop rather than under one, which suits a studio or a second kitchen, and you lose the worktop space it occupies.
What to measure
- Opening width, at the front and again at the back of the run.
- Opening height, from the finished floor to the underside of the worktop. Not to the top of the cabinet rail, to the actual underside the machine has to clear.
- Opening depth, from the front of the cabinet line to the back wall. Then subtract for pipework, because the water and waste connections sit behind the machine and they need room.
- The door swing. A dishwasher door drops to horizontal and the racks pull out over it. Measure the clear floor space in front and check nothing opposite blocks it, which matters in a galley kitchen.
- Where the services are. Water inlet, waste connection and a socket. If any of the three is not already at that position, that is plumbing and electrical work to arrange before delivery.
Check the carton against your front door
The Electrolux ESA47200SX ships in a 635 x 894 x 680 mm carton. The EFF1460VSA ships in 644 x 881 x 661 mm. Neither is difficult through a normal doorway, but they are heavy and awkward, and a tight turn between the lift lobby and your entrance is worth checking in advance.

Common questions
What is the standard cutout for a built-in dishwasher?
For 60 cm machines, 600 mm wide by 815 mm high by 550 mm deep covers the Bosch fully-integrated range. Electrolux's EEM48301L asks for 600 x 820 x 550 mm. For 45 cm semi-integrated, the Bosch SPI2HKS42E needs 450 x 815 x 550 mm.
Can a freestanding dishwasher go under a worktop?
Generally no. Freestanding machines in our range are 845 to 850 mm tall, which is the same as or taller than a typical worktop underside. Some freestanding models allow the top panel to be removed, but this varies by model and is not something to assume. If the machine is going under a worktop, buy a built-in or semi-integrated one.
How much clearance do I need behind the machine?
Enough for the water inlet hose, the waste hose and the power cable without kinking any of them. The published cutout depth assumes the services are already routed sensibly. If your waste pipe sits proud of the back wall, measure from the pipe, not the wall.
Is 45 cm enough for a family?
It depends on how you cook. A 45 cm machine typically handles fewer than 10 place settings against 13 or 14 for a 60 cm. For a household that cooks most nights, the narrow machine gets run twice as often, which uses more water overall.
Do I need a plumber?
If a dishwasher has been in that position before and the water, waste and power connections are all there, usually not. If you are putting one where there has never been one, you need the water tee, a waste connection and a socket installed first. That is trade work and it happens before delivery, not on the day.
