This is the fastest way to buy the wrong hob in Singapore, and it is not a size problem. Town Gas and LPG burn at different pressures and need different injector jets. A Town Gas hob connected to a cylinder will not run properly, and the reverse is worse.
The catch is that manufacturers frequently sell both versions under nearly the same model code. One letter apart, in some cases.
Which supply do you have?
Town Gas is piped. If you have a gas meter and a monthly bill from City Energy, that is Town Gas, and it covers most HDB blocks and older condos on the piped network.
LPG is cylinder gas. If there is a metal cylinder in the base cabinet and someone delivers a replacement when it runs out, that is LPG. Landed property and blocks without a piped connection commonly run on it.
If you genuinely cannot tell, look at the hose. Piped Town Gas connects to a fixed pipe with an isolating valve at the wall. LPG connects to a regulator screwed onto a cylinder head. Check before you order, not after.
How the brands handle the split
Every brand solves this differently, which is half the reason people get it wrong.
Mayer is the clearest. Each gas hob exists as two separate products with distinct codes. The MMSS633, MMGH633HI, MMGH360HI, MMSS360HI, MMGH772HI, MMGH773HI, MMGH278HI and MMGH378HI are all listed twice, once for Town Gas and once for LPG, with the gas type stated on the listing.
Bosch encodes it in the suffix, and it is easy to misread. The PMD83D31AF is Town Gas. The PMD83D31AX is LPG. One character. The same pattern runs through the domino hobs, where the PRB3A6I40X is Town Gas and the PRB3A6I40L is LPG.
Electrolux is subtler still. The EHG9350BEP is the Town Gas version and the EHG9350BE is the cylinder gas version. If you are cross-shopping from a spec sheet, that trailing P is doing a lot of work.
Teka takes a different route on the GK LUX 78.1 3G, which is listed as convertible between Town Gas and LPG. Conversion means changing the injectors, and it is a job for the installer, not a switch on the appliance.
Fujioh lists both heating loads on a single page for its gas hobs and does not publish a separate SKU per gas type. We have not been able to confirm a per-model split from published information, so we leave the gas type field blank on Fujioh gas hobs rather than filling it in with a guess. If you are looking at a Fujioh gas hob, confirm the gas type before ordering.
Filtered lists, if you already know your supply
We split the catalogue by supply type so you do not have to decode suffixes. There are 45 models in Town Gas hobs and 37 in LPG hobs. Anything that appears in neither is either induction, electric, or a gas hob whose supply type we have not been able to verify.
Installation is not a DIY job
Gas hob installation in Singapore has to be carried out by a Licensed Gas Service Worker. This is not a manufacturer recommendation, it is a licensing requirement, and it applies to connecting a hob to a piped supply as much as to a cylinder.
Practically, that means the hob arrives and then a licensed worker connects it, tests for leaks and commissions it. Building that into your schedule matters more than it sounds, because a hob sitting in a box for two weeks waiting for a gas appointment is a common and avoidable annoyance.
It also means an unlicensed handyman offering to do it cheaply is a genuinely bad idea rather than a corner worth cutting.
Can a hob be converted?
Some can, using a conversion kit that swaps the injectors, and some cannot. Where a manufacturer supports it, they say so, as Teka does on the GK LUX 78.1 3G. Where they do not, running the hob on the wrong gas is unsafe and voids the warranty.
Conversion is also not free. Between the kit and the licensed labour, buying the correct version in the first place is usually cheaper and always simpler.
The alternative worth considering
If your gas supply is a nuisance either way, induction sidesteps it. No gas connection, no licensed gas worker, no cylinder swaps. The trade is that you need an adequate electrical supply instead, and on the higher-powered models that is its own piece of preparation. Our induction hobs range covers it, and the full hobs and cooktops listing lets you compare both.
What the burners are for
If you are choosing between brass burner counts and wondering whether any of it matters, char kway teow and the wok hei problem at home works through what a domestic gas hob can and cannot do with a wok, using two of the Mayer models named above.
Common questions
What happens if I connect a Town Gas hob to LPG?
LPG runs at a higher pressure than Town Gas, so the flame from Town Gas jets will be oversized and unstable, with sooting and a real fire risk. This is not a performance compromise, it is a safety problem. The reverse gives you weak flames that will not cook properly.
How do I tell which gas I have in an HDB flat?
Most HDB blocks on the piped network use Town Gas, with a meter and a monthly City Energy bill. If instead there is a cylinder in the base cabinet with a regulator on top, you are on LPG. If a previous owner switched, the physical connection is the reliable answer, not the block.
Why do two hobs with almost the same model code cost the same but differ?
Because the only difference is the injector set fitted at the factory. The Bosch PMD83D31AF and PMD83D31AX are the same hob with different jets. Read the last character, and read the gas type stated on the listing.
Can I install a gas hob myself?
No. Connecting a gas appliance in Singapore requires a Licensed Gas Service Worker. Arrange the appointment around your delivery date rather than after it.
Is induction cheaper to run than gas?
Running cost depends on electricity and gas tariffs at the time, so we will not put a number on it here. What is not in doubt is that induction transfers more of its energy into the pan than a gas burner does, since a gas flame loses a lot of heat around the sides of the cookware.
