Why is 78 cm so common in Singapore?
Because it is what most three-burner gas hobs are built to, and three-burner gas is the default in a lot of Singapore kitchens. It barely exists in European catalogues, which is why an imported range often jumps straight from 60 cm to 90 cm and leaves a hole exactly where local demand sits.
Is a 78 cm hob actually 78 cm wide?
The appliance is roughly that. The cutout is not. Hobs in this band need anywhere from about 650 mm to 750 mm of aperture depending on the brand, and that is a far wider spread than any other size class in the catalogue. Do not assume one 78 cm hob drops into the hole another one left. Check the published cutout on both.
What hood goes with a hob this size?
90 cm. A hood needs to be at least as wide as the hob, and the next standard size up from 78 is 90. Put a 60 cm hood over this and the outer burners sit outside the capture area, which is exactly where the smoke gets away.
