A 60 cm machine takes 13 or 14, a 45 cm slimline around 9 or 10. A place setting is a full set of plates, bowls and cutlery for one person rather than a single plate, so 14 is genuinely a lot for a family of four.

You need water in, drainage out and power, all within reach of the opening. Those get planned during a renovation rather than added afterwards, so raise it with your contractor early if the kitchen is still being built.
